WINEMAKERS: Filippo CALaBRiESE

The Alessandro family has been part of the Cortona winescape well before it became as well known as it is today. After years of experimentation finding the grape varietals that best suited the area, it was Syrah that would triumph and become the icon for the winery. The warm, dry climate allowed for Syrah to flourish in a distinctly Tuscan way. The first vintage of a 100% Syrah in 1992 paved the way for Cortona to become a DOC in 1999. Vineyard have also been planted to Viognier and Sangiovese. Certified Organic in 2016, and now under the ownership of the Calabresi family.

region: CORTONA, TUSCANY

A small (200 ha) DOC area in the southern area of Tuscany, near Lake Trasimeno and Umbria. More modern than many other areas, achieving DOC status in 1999. A mixture of Italian varieties and International varietals are grown here successfully – with Syrah showing particular promise for producing complex wines. Total production is also low, with around 39,000 bottles produced each year from this DOC.
